The Egyptian Ministry of Transport began constructing the first subway in the Alexandria Governorate, where a contract was signed to implement the infrastructure and systems works for the Alexandria Metro, as part of the interest in the Alexandria Governorate and within the Ministry of Transport’s plan to develop railway transport lines within the Arab Republic of Egypt in general and in the Alexandria Governorate in particular as it is the second largest governorate. In the Republic, it is one of the most important tourist governorates that witnesses great crowding, especially in the summer.
In the following points we monitor the details of the construction of the Alexandria Metro:
1. The Abu Qir line will be converted into an electric metro, extending 43.2 kilometers in length
2. It includes 20 stations, and the operational speed of the line is 100 km/h.
3. It is implemented in three separate stages.
4. The first phase extends from Abu Qir station to Misr station, with a length of 21.7 km.
5. The first phase extends in a 6.5 km surface track from Misr Station until before Al Dhaheriya Station, then in a 15.2 km overhead track until Abu Qir Station.
6. The service will be exchanged with the Cairo-Alexandria railway line at the Misr station and with the Rasheed railway line at the Maamoura station.
7. It exchanges service with the Raml Tram at Sidi Gaber and Victoria stations.
8. A plan to extend the line towards Burj Al Arab to connect with the first line of the high-speed electric train.
9. It is scheduled to extend towards New Abu Qir to connect with the fourth line of the high-speed electric train.
10. It will connect the mass transportation networks in Alexandria Governorate together.
11. The duration of implementation of “civil works – railway works – signals works – communications – central control – ticket gates – energy supply works – electrical and mechanical works – workshop equipment” is 30 months.
12. A total of 14 toboggans, illegal crossings, and intersections with traffic were cancelled.
13. The maximum passenger capacity will be increased from 2,850 passengers/hour/direction to 60,000 passengers/hour/direction.
14. The journey time will be reduced from 50 minutes to 25 minutes.
15. Operating speed will be increased from 25 km/h to 100 km/h
16. Achieving a shorter distillation time from 10 minutes to 2.5 minutes.
