(CRHoy.com) Carlos Avendaño Calvo, deputy of National Restoration, is the new Vice President of the Legislative Assembly.
Avendaño obtained this Saturday the support of 38 votes, 35 from deputies, two blank and one null, who joined him. Despite being the only one who ran for office, the Social Christians, María Vita Monge and Erwen Masís, also received a vote. Meanwhile, the also Social Christian Jorge Fonseca reached 13 votes.
In his three opportunities in Congress (2002-2006 / 2010-2014 / 2018-2022) Avendaño has made clear his conservative positions on social and moral issues, such as his opposition to marriage between same-sex couples, in vitro fertilization and abortion.
In 2014, the 65-year-old legislator was the presidential candidate of the National Restoration Party for the presidential elections in February of that year.
This is not the first time that Avendaño has served on the Legislative Board in his three opportunities in Congress. In 2003, 2004 and 2012 he was First Deputy Secretary. In 2005, 2006 and 2010 he was Second Assistant Secretary. In 2013 he was vice president of Congress.
Avendaño has a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the Mauro Fernández Acuña High School in Tibás and has studies in Theology from the Asambleas de Dios Biblical Institute, where he obtained the title of minister with a degree in Theological Formation. He has been an evangelical pastor for the past 20 years.
Deputy Avendaño was nominated by his benchmate, Mileidy Alvarado, who highlighted his vocation for dialogue and negotiation.
At 10:05 am this Saturday, Silvia Hernández, deputy of National Liberation (PLN), was elected as president of the Congress, with 42 votes, compared to 14 that her opponent, the Christian Socialist, María Vita Monge obtained.
