Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar has submitted a list of pending cases against him in his affidavit. There are 19 cases against him, out of which ten are related to taking out marches, four are related to income tax evasion, and three are related to money laundering. In terms of his assets, he has disclosed a value of Rs. 1139 crore, while his liabilities add up to Rs. 263 crore.
The cases against Shivakumar are not new. He has been charged under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in 2017 for alleged tax evasion and hawala transactions. Shivakumar was also arrested by the Income Tax Department in 2017, and a case was registered against him and his brother by the IT Department in 2019. However, Shivakumar’s decision to disclose the cases against him in his affidavit has garnered mixed reactions. In terms of his assets, Shivakumar’s declared value of Rs. 1139 crore might seem surprising to many people, given that he is a politician. However, it is worth noting that he comes from a family of wealthy businessmen, and his family has been involved in the real estate industry for several years. Furthermore, Shivakumar himself has been involved in several businesses, including a hospital, a college, and a chain of restaurants.
While Shivakumar’s asset value might not be surprising, his liabilities of Rs. 263 crore are quite significant. This means that while he might be wealthy on paper, he also has significant debts to pay off. This might hinder his ability to perform his duties as a politician, as he might be bogged down by the financial burden of his liabilities.
