Congo-Brazzaville: Mobile telephony – A jump of about 2% of income in March 2020

Compared with March 2019 data, telephone and mobile internet income increased by 1.82%, or a revenue of 16.4 billion FCFA, according to a report in March 2020 published by the Post and electronic communications regulatory agency (Arpce).

Key figures for the telephone and mobile internet markets in March 2020 show an improvement in revenues in the three main voice, internet and sms segments. But according to the document published by the regulator on its website, this jump observed compared to March 2019 comes mainly from mobile internet and SMS revenues which increased by 21.93% and 5.46% respectively in March 2020 .

Figures that explain the attractiveness of mobile phone users to data, thanks to the regulatory framework for internet and sms package offers. Even if voice income occupies the strongest peloton during this period, with notably 67.4% of global income against 27.3% on that of mobile Internet, the distribution made by Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) – the average monthly turnover achieved by a company with a client – shows that the mobile internet income in March 2020 stood at 48.8% compared to 47.2% for outgoing voices and 4.0% for SMS.

The operator MTN had the largest market share of total revenue in March 2020, 66.4% compared to 33.6% over its competitor Airtel Congo.

The table drawn up by Arpce highlights that the market registered 5.055 million subscribers to mobile communication services in March 2020, for a penetration rate of 97.5%. In March 2019, the number of subscribers amounted to 5.051 million for a penetration rate of 100.1%.
