Confusion of Formula E Marshals Over Jakarta’s Unique Hot Weather

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – There are many unique stories that happened at the Jakarta 2023 Formula E event. One of them is the matter of the marshals’ confusion over the hot weather.

To note, Formula E marshals are dominated by foreign nationals from Europe and Australia who have received FIA certification.

Most of the marshals said they were surprised by the high heat in Jakarta. This condition is reasonable, considering that the countries of origin usually have cool or cold climates.

Brad Mound, a marshal from Scotland in charge of logistics, admitted that he was quite ‘tortured’ by the hot weather at the Jakarta International E-prix Circuit, Ancol, North Jakarta.

This is the first time visiting Jakarta. He didn’t come the year before because he had health problems that prevented him from going.

Brad described Jakarta’s hot temperature as quite unique, because it doesn’t only spread over the surface of the skin, but also spreads to the top of the head.

“The heat is extraordinary because it reaches my head. To be honest, yesterday I was dizzy because the heat was really unreasonable,” he told Kompas.com on the sidelines of the Formula E FP, Friday (2/6/2023).

The same thing was conveyed by Herbert, an FIA marshal who is a cable television and camera technician. According to him, he bathed 5 times a day when he first arrived in Indonesia.

“The climate in Indonesia is tropical and a little deceptive. On my watch it says the temperature is touching 36 degrees Celsius, but the heat feels more than that. This is crazy,” he said.

Herbert added, he and several of his colleagues had brought a small swimming pool. In the afternoon after the event, he will do an ice plunge, aka throwing himself into a pool of ice cubes.

“It feels like living again,” he said

For information, the hot weather in Jakarta is indeed an obstacle that the FIA ​​really anticipates. One solution taken is to increase the number of air conditioners (AC).

“This year we are providing at least 1,000 units of air conditioners, so the weather is much cooler,” said Alberto Longo, COO of Formula E.
