The tension between clothing brands and China on the Uighurs shows more than ever the need for supply traceability. A group of NGOs filed a complaint on Thursday with the Paris judicial court against four of them: the French group SMCP (Sandro, Maje, Claudie Pierlot), the Japanese giants Uniqlo and Spanish Inditex (Zara, Bershka … ) and the American sports brand Skechers. Last month H & M, but also Burberry, Nike, Adidas suffered boycott calls from Chinese Internet users, after their questions about the forced labor of Uyghur Muslims in the cotton fields of Xinjiang. This sparked an uproar from local authorities. These controversies highlight the transparency issues in the sector. Brands find themselves stuck between an ethical requirement, and a country which is their main supplier and a large consumer market.
