Conflict in Sudan: Seizure of Central Lab Raises Biological Risk, says WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that one of the parties to the conflict in Sudan seized the central laboratory. It contains samples of diseases, including polio and measles.

“There is a huge biological risk associated with the occupation of the central public health laboratory … by one of the warring parties,” the WHO representative in Sudan, Nima Saeed Abid, told reporters via video link (quoted by AFP).

In April, an armed confrontation began in Sudan between the official army and the Rapid Reaction Forces, which were supposed to unite under an agreement to return the country to civilian rule. More than 400 people became victims of the fighting. From midnight on April 24, the parties agreed on a truce for 72 hours.
