Things were heating up between the mercenary groups Wagner with the military Russia. Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin claimed that his troops had shot down a Russian military helicopter.
“A helicopter has just opened fire on civilian lines. The helicopter has been shot down by a Wagner PMC unit,” Prigozhin said in a new audio message, the news agency reported. AFPSaturday (24/6/2023).
Wagner’s boss did not provide details and AFP was unable to verify the claim.
Prigozhin earlier said his unit, which for months had spearheaded the offensive in Ukraine east, has now entered the Rostov region, southern Russia.
Prigozhin accused the Chief of the Russian General Military Staff Valery Gerasimov of ordering the attack on his units, even though they were moving between civilian vehicles. The attack was called Prigozhin had killed about 2 thousand of his men.
The Wagner boss has called for the overthrow of Russia’s military leadership, prompting a tightening of security in Moscow.
“Security measures in Moscow have been tightened. All important facilities, government infrastructure objects and transport have been placed under strengthened safeguards,” Russian state news agency TASS reported, citing a Russian law enforcement source.
The report comes after Prigozhin accused Moscow of targeting its troops with a deadly missile strike and vowed revenge.
