A 69-year-old woman was stabbed on a train at Antwerp Central station. The victim was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, but her condition was stabilized there. The police were able to arrest a suspect.
The incident took place around 11:30 am on a train arriving from Leuven at Antwerp Central station. It is still unclear what exactly happened. According to our information, the woman felt pain at one point and only then noticed that she had been stung several times.
According to initial reports, the victim was stabbed four times. “The 69-year-old woman was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition,” confirms the federal police and the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. During the afternoon, news arrived that the woman’s condition had stabilized in hospital. “Two other people, witnesses to the stabbing, were also taken to hospital in shock.”
The suspect, a man in his twenties from Iraq, tried to escape. He was stopped at the entrance hall by Securail security officers. He was arrested and taken to the police station for questioning. The circumstances and context surrounding the stabbing are still very unclear. The train in question was canceled and the police set up a perimeter on track 12. The forensic laboratory arrived on site for further investigation. The police will interview several witnesses and investigate the case further.
