Composer Juraj Filas has died – Novinky.cz

Filas ‘death was confirmed by conductor Leoš Svárovský, who last year premiered Filas’ large oratorio Záhořovo lože with the Hradec Králové Philharmonic.

“On the last day of 2021, Juraj Filas, one of the greatest composers of our country at the end of the late 20th century, died. He was the first living composer to be played at Carnegie Hall in New York since 1959, “wrote Marta and Stanislav Kotyz in an e-mail sent to the Czech Center in New York.

They run the Harmony Foundation in the United States and have worked with Filas.

Filas was born in 1955 in Košice, but has lived in Prague since the mid-1970s. He has created over 100 songs that have been performed in various countries.

He has achieved repeated success abroad with his work. According to the Kotyzs, his compositions have been played six times in New York’s Carnegie Hall over the past 15 years.

Filas’ Requiem The Prayer for Hope was heard last year in New York during a digital show that was part of reverence evenings to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States.
