Completion of construction: The motorway to Austria will be completed in five years, promises ŘSD

The 8.6-kilometer-long section of Třebonín – Kaplice nádraží, which will connect to the České Budějovice motorway bypass being built today, is the furthest in preparation. Valbek and Novák & partner won the contract for tender documentation and author’s supervision in a tender with a price of 26 million crowns. The estimated price was 31 million.

The construction proceedings began in the middle of the holidays, while the ŘSD is still planning to announce a tender for a construction company this year. It is to be built in the years 2021 to 2024 and the total costs are estimated at 2.5 billion crowns.

Probably the most demanding construction will be the almost 12-kilometer section Kaplice nádraží – Nažidla. Among other things, the construction will include two bridge flyovers with a total length of 1.5 kilometers. Valbek will supply the tender documentation for 63 million (assumption was 75 million), ŘSD chose from three bids. Construction for an estimated 6.4 billion is planned for the years 2022 to 2025.

Documentation for the last almost four kilometers from Nažidel to the border will be provided by Pragoprojekt for 28.5 million (assumption 32 million). The tender for the contractor is planned for 2022, when construction should also begin. Motorists should then get to Austria on the South Bohemian highway in 2025.

A tragic accident near Nažidel

However, the dates were still being postponed, in the middle of the decade there was talk of bringing the highway to the border in 2022. It is already 17 years since the tragic bus accident near Nažidel, in which twenty passengers died. Even then, the highway (still planned as R) was talked about as a priority.

At the same time, the inaction of the Austrians served as an excuse for a long time, but in 2015 they finally led their S10 expressway through difficult terrain with a number of tunnels to Freistadt. In this way, they have solved their own problems with transit and, with further construction, are waiting for events on the Czech side. At the time of the ceremonial “opening” at Freistadt, ŘSD spoke about the start of construction under Budějovice in 2017.

Now there is a consensus on interconnection in 2025.
