NEW JERSEY — Residents of Jersey City and Hoboken will have a new way to travel from city to city.
This is thanks to the completion of a new bike path along Marine Avenue yes Henderson Streetwhat a CONETTO 18th street in Jersey City with Observer Highway in Hoboken, Hoboken Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop announced Monday.
The connection is the latest initiative of Vision Zero create safer streets and eliminate dead and injured in both cities.
“Hoboken is committed to making roads safer for all forms of transportation and this protected bike path is the latest example of that,” Mayor Bhalla said. “We are proud to work hand-in-hand with Jersey City to better protect cyclists as they travel between our cities and work towards our respective Vision Zero goals to eliminate deaths and injuries. Thanks to Mayor Fulop, Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise and Commissioner Anthony Romano for helping make this much-needed connection.”
Created with a new high-visibility traffic separation curb, flexible bollards, and pavement for high-visibility and traction, the new secured bikeway will provide a safe and convenient option for cyclists who commute between Jersey City and Hoboken each day to reach major public transport hubs, workplaces, as well as shopping and dining destinations.
“Jersey City and Hoboken are among the most unique and busiest transportation hubs in the nation, and this new bikeway connecting our two cities is the latest step in expanding Jersey City’s growing network of protected bikeways to provide more connectivity and safety to our residents and beyond,” Mayor Fulop said. “We are proud to work with Hoboken, Commissioner Romano and Hudson County Executive DeGise to find innovative approaches that offer countless new opportunities for the entire community, from education and employment to health care and economic stimulus” .
The connection is the latest step both cities have taken to make it easier for residents to choose greener modes of transportation in accordance with both cities’ climate action plans. Last year, Jersey City and Hoboken teamed up to launch a unified bike-sharing system with Lyft’s Citi Bike to provide better connectivity between the two communities.
Since the association was launched in 2021, users have made more than 180,329 trips between the two cities, accounting for 13% of total passengers.
In addition to the protected cycleway, the project also incorporates improvements for pedestrians and motorists, including the painting of high-visibility crosswalks, as well as new turning lanes extended to Via Newark yes Observer Highway in Hoboken. The extended turn lanes will increase queuing capacity along Marin Boulevard and Henderson Street as it enters Hoboken, which should provide a small improvement in traffic flow.
These improvements of Vision Zero try to eliminate the corridor of High Crash Hoboken and Jersey City networks as identified in each city’s Vision Zero action plans. Jersey City and Hoboken are two of the only New Jersey cities to have adopted the initiatives Vision Zero.
