Comparing Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen: Who Should Bayern Munich Sign as their New Striker?

Who closes the gap in the center of the storm? This question, which flared up about a year ago with the departure of Robert Lewandowski, has been a hot topic at FC Bayern ever since.

For a season, the record champions tried, above all, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting at the top. Although things were going well for a while, the crisis after the World Cup made for a clear realization at management level: a real top nine is needed! There are currently two big names buzzing through the Bavarian capital: Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen.

Bayern obviously don’t want to leave anything to chance this time and grab the top shelf for a new goal guarantor. According to SPORT1 information, Kane would be open to a move to Munich if nothing came of staying in England. Osimhen has been on the Munich list since April, as SPORT1 reported.

One thing is clear: Bayern have not yet decided on a desired striker. The transfer committee around Uli Hoeneß and Supervisory Board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has several options open.

Reason enough to take a closer look at the two top candidates Kane and Osimhen!

Kane: A wall striker with class in play

As early as the summer of 2022, the name Kane was mentioned as a possible successor to Lewandowski, who had migrated to FC Barcelona. That the 29-year-old is a player who stands for goals was again impressively demonstrated by the Tottenham striker in the past season.

The Englishman has scored a whopping 30 goals in 38 league games and is now the second most successful Premier League attacker of all time behind the legendary Alan Shearer.

Since the start of the 2014/15 season, only Lewandowski (261), Lionel Messi (253), Cristiano Ronaldo (234) and Kane (210) have scored more than 200 goals in the top five European leagues. In addition, the native of London only replaced Wayne Rooney as the top scorer of the English national team in March (58 goals).

The unmistakable trademark of Kane: Although the Englishman is a classic wall striker, he has the playful class to be able to swim freely in narrow spaces and to be able to distribute balls cleverly.

With almost five room-opening passes over at least ten meters (source: fbref.com) Kane has clear advantages over Osimhen, who averages only one such action per game.

Initiate an attack, also on the flank, move up into the sixteen and score goals – that’s how the path Bayern often went with Lewandowski looked like.

With a height of 1.88 meters (Lewandowski: 1.85 m), Kane is also an excellent taker of crosses and set pieces, especially with his head.

Osimhen fires on all guns

Similar to the Englishman, however, Osimhen is also extremely powerful, assertive and a real snapper. The pure yield of the two stars differs only slightly at most.

The Nigerian striker led SSC Napoli to their first Italian title in 33 years with 26 goals in 32 games last season, while also putting himself on the wish lists of numerous top clubs. But unlike Kane, who has been a goalkeeper for almost a decade, it was Osimhen’s first season with such excellent scoring.

Nevertheless, it is now known that the ex-Wolfsburg player finds his way around the penalty areas particularly well and tries to do it from practically every position. On average, Osimhen shoots an impressive 4.43 times at the opponent’s box per match (Kane “only” 3.14 times). His height of 1.86 meters also exudes an extreme presence, the good header game is added to that.

Osimhen also likes to serve as a wall player. Unlike the Tottenham star, however, he usually seeks the way down when he lets a ball clap. In terms of speed, the Nigerian (34.7 km/h) is clearly ahead of Kane (31.5 km/h).

However, Napoli’s goalscorer was rarely involved in his team’s combination game. At Bayern he would have to change something in this regard.

Osimhen is waiting for Bayern!

Far from any performance-related data, Osimhen has guaranteed an advantage over Kane: He’s only 24 years old, making him significantly younger and more viable than the England international.

In addition, according to SPORT1 information, the Naples star has made it clear in recent talks – also with other clubs – that he is waiting for FC Bayern because he would like to return to Germany, also for private reasons: his girlfriend Stephanie comes from Wolfsburg, her family still lives in Germany.

The big problem for Munich is Osimhen’s price. He is contractually bound to the Neapolitans until 2025, so they should call for a sum well above 100 million for him.

However, there is also a risk of tough poker with Tottenham, although Kane’s contract only has one year left. Spurs boss Daniel Levy has long been considered a tough negotiating partner in the industry.

According to The Athletic, the German record champions have already made an offer for 70 million euros plus bonuses for Kane, but according to SPORT1 information, the Londoners do not want to let their goal getter go – especially not for the reported sum.

“Kane is the safer option”

Bayern’s search for a striker is also hotly debated on social media.

A majority of SPORT1 users prefer the Tottenham star as the new Bayern nine. “Kane is the more complete forward, has more experience and I think Osimhen is in danger of becoming a one-hit wonder,” wrote vince_nt1008, for example.

omidakhavan.official took the same line: “Kane is the safer option because he scores a lot of goals over a number of years. Osimhen has now had a top season and is more in demand in a top team whose system is designed for counterattacks or switching games. There used to be a striker named Immobilien. That brings back memories.”

Osimhen the better long-term solution?

When users sided with the Nigerian, the main argument was often the better perspective.

“I think Kane would score more goals for us than Osimhen, but he looks more like a long-term solution,” said berandiemango, among others.

“If so, then Osimhen – younger, livelier, faster and more effective and also dangerous in front of goal,” emphasized thewolf19_84 and sash.fi added: “Osimhen stands for the future.”
