Companies don’t let anyone walk out the door anymore | NOW

Twenty companies have more than twenty thousand vacancies. Nu.nl asked this businesses by the number of employees they have, had and would like to have. Some companies are in the midst of reorganisations, others are growing so turbulently that it is impossible to recruit. They have one thing in common: if possible, they don’t let anyone walk out the door anymore.

ING, NS, Achmea, KPN and PostNL are examples of companies that have undergone reorganisations, change processes, transformations or whatever you call it, but also have hundreds to thousands of vacancies.

“The amount of mail is shrinking every year while the amount of parcels is growing,” says Dagna Hoogkamer of PostNL. “That’s why we adapt the organization to those volumes as best as possible.” This means that in some places employees are no longer needed, and in others they are. “When someone is no longer needed in one place, we would love to keep them in another place. We do our very best not to let anyone walk out the door.”

The twenty other companies also indicate that on balance no more jobs will disappear and that compulsory redundancies are certainly not an issue.

A young and rapidly growing company such as ASML is now dealing with employees who are retiring for the first time. “That is fairly new for us,” says Monique Mols of the chip machine maker. “On top of that, we also have to deal with the tight labor market.”

“You would prefer to put on a baby bodysuit with ‘I love technique’ on it”

ASML is in the technical corner and they have been dealing with shortages for much longer. “If you find out now that you need to invest in new people, it’s too late.” Internships are a very important ‘weapon’ in the battle for the employee for ASML.

“Interns, we have a few hundred of them a year. A large part of them stick around.” They are also increasingly enabling MBO students through work-study programs in the cleanroom work, where the chip machines are assembled.

“The practice is very successful and you hope that they will stay,” says Mols. “You want to be there as early as possible. Ideally, your babies would like to put on a romper with ‘I love technique’ on it, especially the girls.”

At Kruidvat you can apply and work with your best friend

The parent company of drugstores Kruidvat, Trekpleister and perfumery ICI Paris also has thousands of vacancies. “This is mainly because they are side jobs for the people who work for us,” says José Mes of AS Watson. “And they often change jobs. That is a challenge, especially in the big cities.”

To meet this challenge, the company has already made it possible to apply via WhatsApp, contracts are no longer than one A4 sheet and employees receive a bonus when they introduce a new colleague.

“We have recently started applying for jobs in duos,” says Mes. “You can then apply with your best friend to work together. The first duo has just been hired.”

Jumbo has the largest number of vacancies, followed by AS Watson, PostNL, Facilicom, Rabobank and Action.
