Common Food Fund in Gironde: Empowering Citizens for Sustainable Food Rights

In March 2024, after 2 and a half years of reflection and co-construction, the Acclimat’Action association, the 40 citizens from the commitment paths towards food democracy, the department of Gironde and the city of Bordeaux, launched the experimentation of the Common Food Fund in Gironde. A new form of social protection that would make the right to sustainable food effective for everyone.

Faced with growing food insecurity and the impoverishment of many agricultural stakeholders, the common food fund in Gironde will allow for a year of experimentation with a food fund managed by citizens to contribute to the right to a sustainable food in Gironde.

The Social Food Security experiment aims in particular to promote more qualitative food, in a short circuit, with an increase in food purchasing power, while acting on the agricultural system in order to secure farmers’ income. .

When and who?

From April 2024 and for one year, there are 400 Girondins and Girondins (193 households), from rural and urban areas: Bègles, Bordeaux Nord and La Benauge, Pays Foyen and Sud-Gironde who will pave the way for experimentation.

The 193 households were selected by drawing lots according to criteria of representativeness, income and composition of the household in particular.

Participants contribute according to their means and equally distribute a financial allowance dedicated to food.

Each participant will receive a monthly allowance of 150 Food Coins (1 MonA = 1€) per household and 75 MonA per additional person.

MonAs are received in a digital account. It is then possible to spend them in approved locations using a 4-digit code, like a credit card terminal. The difference is that the manipulation is done on a smartphone, computer or even tablet screen.

Participants will be able to purchase their supplies from approved sales locations that meet the following criteria:

  • accessibility and inclusiveness,
  • well-being at work,
  • transparency and fair remuneration of producers,
  • the location of the products,
  • the sustainability of agricultural practices.

Four local food funds are set up (one per territory). Every month, participants will meet there to discuss and make decisions relating to the operation of their fund: the eligibility of new businesses for example.

Local stakeholders, points of sale, non-contributing citizens can contribute to the local fund but cannot take part in decisions.
