Comment: The “non-interference” of politics in sports begins

In recent months, we have heard from many quarters how politics should not interfere with sports. These days and the coming months will show who really meant these words and who only uses them when they are convenient for him.

You can already see it these days, when the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the Olympic Games is being discussed. A group of deputies called on the Slovak Olympic and Sports Committee (SOŠV) not to agree to their participation under the five circles, while the other took the president of SOŠV Anton Siekel a call to support the participation of Russians and Belarusians in the Olympics.

In short – politicians came to talk about how sport should not be politicized and they said it in front of the Sports Olympic Committee after a meeting with its president. But it is said that it is not mixing politics into sports.

And since the elections are approaching and it is necessary to collect political points in your target groups, similar oddities will only increase. We can only look forward to what the coming months will bring and how more and more politicians “will not” interfere in sports.

Sport and politics cannot be separated, they have always been and will always be connected vessels. And it is nonsense to bring up words about not connecting politics with sports in connection with the Russian military aggression in Ukraine. Sports, and hockey in particular, is one of the main tools of Russian propaganda, which is perfectly shown by looking at the profile photo of Alexander Ovechkin on Instagram.

To talk about the fact that the participation of Russians and Belarusians under the five circles, even under a neutral flag, could help peace is also laughable. If that really happened and the Ukrainians did not subsequently boycott the Olympics, it is difficult to imagine how they would work together, or perhaps show that they know how to establish better relations.

Imagine that someone forcibly takes and destroys your house, murders family members or friends. And you should then go to an event where there will be people who support him. You probably wouldn’t shake hands with them.

Yes, the Olympics are supposed to bring peace and be for everyone, but that ended when Russia invaded Ukraine. And when because of this, many Ukrainian athletes could not represent their country, because they went to war, or even died in it.
