Comedian Jennifer Aniston Urges Caution in Today’s World of Comedy When Discussing ‘Friends’ Controversy

CelebritiesThe popular sitcom ‘Friends’ has regularly come under fire in recent years for its lack of diversity, transphobic and misogynistic comments. Comedy actress Jennifer ‘Rachel’ Aniston (54) has been in the profession for about thirty years now and recognizes that humor is no longer so obvious these days. “The great thing about comedy is that we fool ourselves and now we can’t.”

The ‘Friends’ comedy series was hugely popular in the 1990s, but today it evokes mixed reactions among millennials. They are not served with the kind of humor and jokes that come across as offensive. The series was criticized, among other things, for the lack of diversity and the transphobic and misogynistic comments. Matt LeBlanc (Joey) and Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe) previously spoke out about the controversy, but now Jennifer Aniston (Rachel) is also responding for the first time.

Humor has evolved

Aniston – who is currently promoting her new comedy ‘Murder Mystery 2’ with fellow actor Adam Sandler – has been in the business for about thirty years and has seen how ‘humor has evolved’ over the years. “Today it is a bit more difficult, because you have to be very careful. That makes it very difficult for comedians, because the great thing about comedy is that we fool ourselves, we fool life. And now we are not allowed to do that,” she told ‘AFP’.

She then specifically referenced the sitcom “Friends.” “There’s a whole generation of people – kids – who now look back at ‘Friends’ episodes and find them offensive. There were things that were never intentional and others… Well, we should have thought about it more. But I don’t think there was such sensitivity then as there is now.” The actress went on to say how sorry she is that the “sensitivity around comedy” may be the reason why there have been fewer comedies in recent years than there used to be. She concluded: “Everyone needs jokes. The world needs humor! We can’t take ourselves too seriously. Especially not in the United States. Everyone is way too divided.”
