Come on! Get to know ‘Happy Hypoxia’ in Covid-19 Sufferers

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Happy Hypoxia is one thing to watch out for, especially for people who are infected Covid-19. Especially for those who have symptoms such as cough.

“Hypoxia is a lack of oxygen in the blood. Normal people will have shortness of breath, but this does not happen in patients infected with Covid-19,” said Pulmonologist, Dr. Erlina Burhan M.Sc, Sp.P during a press statement from Graha BNPB, Jakarta, Wednesday (16/9/2020).

This is because there is damage to the nerves that deliver the sensors. If there is a lack of oxygen there will be shortness of breath. In normal people there will usually be a signal saying the body is lacking oxygen. So that the brain will give orders to the body to take as much oxygen as possible.

“But in some Covid-19 patients this did not happen, because there was damage to the signal transmission to the brain,” he said again.

Erlina gave an example, there was a case experienced by a 60-year-old man who was exposed to Covid-19 with symptoms of a cough and an increasingly weak body condition. However, the patient does not feel short of breath and can carry out activities as usual.

“When checked, the oxygen level was 60%. Normal people ranged from 95% -100%. This patient was only 60% -70% but had no symptoms of breathlessness, immediately went on a ventilator,” he said.

“Usually, if you have Happy Hypoxia for a long time, you will experience a decrease in consciousness and usually have fatal consequences,” he added.

Even though happy hypoxia seems creepy, according to him, don’t panic. Because happy hypoxia does not usually occur in People Without Symptoms (OTG) Covid-19.

“This is in a person with symptoms of the possibility of happy hypoxia. This does not happen to everyone,” said Erlina.

He advised the public to avoid Covid-19. The method is simple, namely only with 3M, namely wearing a mask, maintaining distance and washing hands. In addition, increasing the body’s immunity is also important.

“Eat nutritionally, get enough rest, don’t smoke, take supplements, take regular light rest and don’t stress. Because if stress is prolonged it will allow a decrease in immunity. If the immune system decreases, any disease can occur,” said Erlina.
