Column 42: ‘While I was on a date, I was decorated’ | Sex & Relationships

In the original date nights category, I was recently taken on a first date to North Sea Jazz. I had never been there before and to be honest I didn’t think it would be my kind of festival. The target audience too old and not a song I could sing along to. However, after one look at the program, I was hooked. Alicia Keys would perform. Let’s go!

Important call

On the way to Rotterdam there was clearly a ‘click’ somewhere and the best vibes danced around us. We played Alicia’s biggest hits, which we hoped to hear live moments later, and talked a lot. Once at the festival, we ordered a drink and waited for the venue to open, when my date was called. We could barely understand each other in the crowd and with all the music, let alone making a phone call in the crowd. But it was important, family business, so he walked all the way back to the exit to make uninterrupted calls.

Fifty year old chatterbox

I was then, alone at North Sea Jazz. I quietly sipped my wine while studying the crowd around me. There’s nothing more fun than people watching. Young hipsters and types like my own father and mother blended effortlessly. It doesn’t get more diverse than this. The call took a long time (How come you don’t call me?), but I had a great time on my own. I just put an Instagram video online when suddenly a man crawled into my aura. Charmer meets chatterbox, fifty or so.

#takes a long time

“What is a beautiful woman like you doing here alone,” he began. “My friend is on the phone.” He: “On the phone? On Sunday night? While you are at a festival with your girlfriend? What could possibly be so important? I would have just pushed that bell away.” The man had a point. Why are you taking me on a date and then disappearing for half an hour? I decided to make the best of it and joined in the Q&A of this Rotterdam chat box. About who he had already seen and what he came for that Sunday. Also for the Girl On Fire, as it turned out, so he suggested we head for the hall. “Otherwise it will be too busy. Your friend better get along.”

Diana Ross on date

There is no lack of confidence in this man. ‘Give Up’ was not in his repertoire; he had “taken Diana Ross on a date,” he said boldly, and now he was trying to get me. While I was on my first date! You’re not making that up. Fifteen minutes before Alicia was due to kick off, luckily my flame came back. “Are you all right with the family?” I asked. “Yes, we’re okay again!” he said. He gave me a big kiss and the poor flapped his hand and put his broad arm around me: “Shall we go in, dear?” Yes, get me out of here!

Even though there was about 5000 males with Alicia, me and my hotline bling were the cutest couple in the room. Holding hands, loving kisses and we both sang along just about every song. ‘No one, no one, no one. Can get in the way of what I’m feeling.’ I had long since forgotten that phone call. Alicia’s performance had the Keys in love. Was this the best first date or what? If I was your womannn…
