Columbia President Minouche Shafik addresses recent protests

In a recent video message, President Minouche Shafik expressed her commitment to rebuilding Columbia University following a tumultuous two weeks on campus.

Difficult weeks have impacted the entire Columbia community

President Shafik referred to the past two weeks as some of the most challenging in the history of Columbia University. She acknowledged the toll it has taken on the entire community, especially the students who have missed out on valuable in-person experiences due to the protests.

“You lost your final days in the classroom and residence halls. For those of you who are seniors, you’re finishing college the way you started, online,” Shafik said.

Attempts at resolution through dialogue have been unsuccessful

President Shafik disclosed that the university had made numerous sincere attempts to find a resolution through extensive dialogues with the students. However, the offers made were not accepted, prolonging the tensions on campus.

Occupy Hamilton Hall protestors cross a new line

While acknowledging the deep concerns of many protestors and their commitment to their cause, President Shafik condemned the group that occupied Hamilton Hall, accusing them of crossing a new line by resorting to violence. This act of occupation compromised the safety of the students.

Rebuilding a community based on truth and civil discourse

Addressing the challenge of polarization, President Shafik emphasized that everyone has a role to play in restoring the values of truth and civil discourse. She encouraged a broader exchange of perspectives and the creation of an inclusive environment that respects divergent opinions.

Complex issues require collective effort

Recognizing the complex nature of issues like the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and anti-Semitism, President Shafik emphasized that no single institution, even a remarkable one like Columbia, can solve them alone. She highlighted the importance of collective effort and collaboration.

Encouraging civil disagreements and building a better world

President Shafik urged students to set an example of civil discourse, promoting a society where individuals can respectfully disagree. She called for unity and collaborative efforts in building a better community.

“We have a lot to do, but I am committed to working at it every day and with each of you to rebuild community on our campus.”
