As of 2 January, Color Line has decided to take the M / S Color Hybrid out of operation. This is as a result of strict infection control measures in both Norway and Sweden, they write in a press release.

The ferry’s route is between Sandefjord and Strømstad.

In mid-December, the company decided to take M / S Color Viking out of operation on the same route.

– When Sweden now raises the level of measures and introduces new entry requirements from 28 December, we must unfortunately also take Color Hybrid out of operation until further notice, says CEO Trond Kleivdal in the press release.

As of 28 December, the Swedish authorities have decided that all foreign travelers must submit a negative corona test when entering Sweden. This also applies to people who are fully vaccinated.

– Then we do not see the opportunity to have sustainable passenger operations on that route over the New Year, says Erik Brynhildsbakken, Executive Vice President for Communications and Public Relations at Color Line.

He says that they have taken out their two ferries that go to Sweden. Two cruise ships between Oslo and Kiel have also been temporarily taken out of service.

The two ferries that still run as usual are the fast ferries to Hirtshals from Larvik and Kristiansand.

Dismisses 150 employees

As a result of Color Hybrid also being taken out of operation, another 150 employees on land and at sea will be laid off.

This is in addition to 800 employees who have previously been notified of redundancies when they decided to cancel the other ships.

– We have a very good contact and dialogue with our employees and our shop stewards, and I think there is a common understanding in the company about the situation and the necessity of the measures. Of course, we also work to get all our employees back as quickly as possible, says Brynhildsbakken.

Earlier in the pandemic, Color Line docked all their ferries for passenger operations. Now Brynhildsbakken hopes that the top of the infection will retreat, so that they can quickly get back into operation.

Johnny Johnny, leader of the Norwegian Seamen’s Association, is in regular contact with shop stewards at Color Line.

– It is broken that employees are laid off again, after having been laid off for over a year, Hansen says.

He says there is an understanding of the situation among the employees, but that the redundancies hit hard.

– There are some where several in the same family work on the same boat. Then a lot of the income disappears, and there are probably some who have to find something else to do, he says.
