This achievement translates into the immunization and protection against the disease of 99 percent of the bovine inventory in Colombia.

According to the statistical report that presents the definitive and final figures of the second vaccination cycle of 2023, this animal health campaign ensured the protection of 29.3 million cattle and buffaloes in Colombia.

José Félix Lafaurie Rivera, executive president of Fedegán, expressed his satisfaction by stating: “This management is very satisfactory since it is the greatest coverage obtained in three decades in which the union has carried out the vaccination cycle.”

The success of the campaign is made up of two segments: the first covers 28,768,294 cattle, equivalent to 99 percent of the total herd of animals in Colombia, and the second includes 563,126 buffaloes, representing 99.6 percent of the total.

In a message of thanks, Lafaurie recognized the fundamental role of the country’s ranchers who have integrated health culture into their herds, highlighting the importance of guaranteeing animal health, allowing the natural evolution of the herd and protecting the foot-and-mouth disease-free status granted by the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO) in February 2020.

José De Silvestri, technical manager of Fedegán and national leader of the animal health campaignl, delivered a report of tranquility regarding the country’s animal health, highlighting the total success of cycle II of 2023, which was carried out without interruptions between October 30 and December 13.

The vaccination campaign reached 99 percent of the country’s bovine and buffalo animals, also immunizing 98 percent of the Colombian farms dedicated to the production of these animals.

At the national level, the department of Amazonas led with 100 percent coveragefollowed by Arauca, Caldas, Casanare, Sucre and Valle del Cauca, which reached 99.9 percent.

The report also highlights that a successful vaccination against brucellosis was achieved, reaching 98.4 percent of the herd of female bovines and buffaloes, particularly in the range of 3 to 9 months of age. The department of Amazonas once again stood out with 100 percent coverage against this disease, followed by Quindío, Sucre and Valle del Cauca with 99.9 percent.
