Cologne: Couple crashed on a sailing yacht, last words make you sad

The sailing ship “Escape” by the German couple Annemarie and Volker Frank drifted across the Atlantic after being killed in a storm.

Volker and Annemarie Frank loved adventure – that’s why they have lived on their sailing yacht and traveled the world since 2019. In June, the couple had an accident on the Atlantic.

Volker and Annemarie Frank lived their dream: In 2019 they left their home in Cologne, lived on their sailing ship and traveled the world. They described their experiences and impressions in their own blog on the Internet.

There, for example, they justified their far-reaching decision to leave their home in the Rhineland behind and to start their adventure together on their sailing yacht: “We decided to turn our lives upside down and dare something completely new. Now we live on our beautiful sailing yacht ‘Escape’ and have made sailing and travel the center of our lives.”

The couple covered more than 24,000 nautical miles with their ship, they traveled to the Canary Islands, Central America, the Caribbean and the USA.

Now the shocking news: In June, the couple was caught in a storm on their way from the Bermuda Islands to Canada and died in an accident.

The last blog entry by Volker and Annemarie Frank dates from June 8, 2022. There they describe their stay in Hamilton, the capital of Bermuda. The city is clean and tidy, and because of the many office buildings it seems much larger than it actually is.

The last words of the entry read: “The first tropical storm of the season, ‘Alex’, is on its way to us. It looks like it’s going to sweep right over our little island paradise.” Little did the couple know at the time that the storm would hit them with all its natural force. Because on June 9th, Volker and Annemarie set off towards Nova Scotia, Canada.

According to the US Coast Guard, they got caught in the storm off the coast of Massachusetts on the morning of June 12 and had an accident. There is said to have been a broken mast, which hit Annemarie first. Volker wanted to come to her aid, but also suffered serious injuries.

Two people who were also present as companions on the sailing yacht of the two Germans then called out the distress signal. The Coast Guard took Volker and Annemarie to Massachusetts, where both were eventually pronounced dead.

The “Escape” drifted across the Atlantic for three weeks after Annemarie and Volker and the two other passengers were collected by the coast guard. Most recently, the sailing yacht was towed by an experienced sailor to Dartmouth Cove in Canada, where the ship will be docked until the investigation is complete.

It is the sad fate of two people who turned their lives upside down to try something completely new. Annemarie worked as a pharmacist in Mechernich for 14 years and wrote about her motivation for the sailing adventure in her blog: “We want to serve as a source of inspiration for other people who have similar projects in mind. We want to share our experiences, recommend vacation spots and take our friends and families with us on our journey.”

They were able to do that, among their blog entries there are numerous comments from people who valued the opinion of the two and who accompanied their journey.

For more than 20 years, Volker and Annemarie were a couple, married – as their thirst for adventure suggested – not in Germany, but in Mauritius. “Maybe we’ll sail there again one day?” says one of her blog posts. Unfortunately, this sailing trip will no longer happen.
