Collective bargaining dispute: Several hundred Amazon employees follow Ver.di’s strike call

Employees of the online retailer Amazon have stopped working at several locations starting Monday night shift, according to Ver.di. Strikes had started in Bad Hersfeld and Koblenz, in Rheinberg and Werne as well as in Leipzig, the union announced on Monday.

For this Monday and Tuesday, Ver.di called on employees at a total of six locations of the mail order group to take work stoppages. Initially, no information was available about the participation in the actions planned for two days. According to Ver.di, around 400 to 450 employees have resigned their work in the logistics center in Rheinberg. In Leipzig, the union expects a similar number of strikers on Monday. In other locations, it is not yet possible to predict how many Amazon employees will participate, it was said in the morning.

The conflict between Ver.di and Amazon has a long tradition. For more than seven years now, the union has been demanding recognition of regional collective agreements for retail and mail order companies. The current walkouts are also about health protection and employee safety.

Amazon had been calm in previous union actions and calls for strikes. A spokesman had emphasized in the past that Amazon is a fair and responsible employer even without a collective agreement. Nationwide, Amazon has 13 logistics locations with around 13,000 permanent employees. There is no official statement on the walkouts.
