COLD… Every day, at the Emergency Department (CPU) of the “Elena Beldiman” Hospital in Bârlad, an average of 15 patients present with respiratory symptoms. Most conditions are present in children, out of about 200 cases, over 100 being detected in children, especially those between 0-4 years. This week’s statistics show an increase in addressability, with a predominantly respiratory pathology (30%-40% of cases), ranging from simple viruses, pneumonia, to severe respiratory infections, including cases of Covid (three hospitalized cases during the week past).

“During the week of January 15-19, the Infectious Diseases and Pneumology departments had to manage a large number of patients, with a bed occupancy rate between 75% and 90%. Patients have acute chronic lung conditions or cases of flu, simple or complicated. Most of the chronic lung patients needed additional oxygen, a fact reflected by the high consumption of the last two weeks. The cold season is the time when viruses and respiratory tract infections increase in all age groups. The specialized wards in our hospital were faced with a large number of patients with these problems, with an occupancy rate of the Pneumology and Infectious Diseases wards above 60-70%. Thus, the number of patients in the last five days, January 15-19 (82 patients in the Pneumology department, 54 in the Infectious Diseases department), numerically exceeded the number of patients hospitalized in the period January 8-14 (78 patients in the Pneumology department, 49 in Infectious Diseases). Most of the patients are elderly, with low immunity, with multiple comorbidities, chronic heart and respiratory diseases, which decompensate and require continuous hospitalization”, Ciprian Cosmin Feraru, the manager of the hospital, stated for Vremea Nouă.

DSP Vaslui’s recommendations

“To prevent the occurrence and spread of respiratory infections, we recommend that the population avoid contact with sick people and crowded areas, avoid traveling in open spaces and prolonged exposure to cold. We also recommend the consumption of foods rich in proteins, fruits and vegetables and, last but not least, the flu vaccination, especially for people at high risk of the disease. Personal hygiene measures, such as washing hands with soap and water, using tissues for sneezing or coughing, are essential to prevent respiratory illnesses, especially the flu. In case of deterioration of the health status, self-medication should be avoided and it is recommended to go to the family doctor’s office to establish the diagnosis and the therapeutic conduct”, Mihaela Topliceanu, the spokesperson of DSP Vaslui, told us.
