In another 15 French departments, code red will apply from tomorrow due to extreme heat. In almost the entire southern half of the country, temperatures are expected to be between 35 and 40 degrees. The mercury may even rise to 42 degrees in the vicinity of Toulouse and in the Rhône valley, French media report.

Code red has already been issued for the departments of Ardèche, Drôme, Rhône and Haute-Loire. In total, the highest weather alert phase will apply in 19 departments tomorrow. Code orange, the second highest phase, is in force for 37 departments, particularly in the center of the country. The peak of the heat wave is expected tomorrow afternoon.

The government advises residents to stay indoors or to be in the sun as short as possible, because too long exposure to the bright sunlight can be dangerous. There is special attention for the elderly: they are called by municipalities and, if necessary, receive help at home. The government may decide to take special measures, such as banning outdoor activities, such as sports or concerts.

The extreme heat started last Sunday. It is very unusual that it is so hot in the country so late in the summer. Yesterday, after August 15, was the warmest day ever measured, reports weather institute Météo France. Showers and thunderstorms are not expected until the end of the week and the extreme heat is likely to come to an end.
