Cobblestones have broken out in the Veldstraat in Ghent: reconstruction will drastically change the view

Gent

A contractor has started breaking out the cobblestones in Veldstraat in Ghent. The work will drastically change the appearance of the popular shopping street.

A contractor started the reconstruction of Veldstraat on Thursday. The tram tracks in the busy shopping street will be torn out, together with the cobblestones, and replaced by a flat layer of asphalt.

Within a few years, thorough renovation will start, as part of the major reconstruction of the so-called Petercelle axis, which continues to Kortrijksepoortstraat. The intention is that Veldstraat will have new tram tracks, footpaths, trees and benches. What is certain: the cobblestones will not return. The street will also have asphalt strips during the final renovation.

The work that started today will normally last three weeks. The ‘new’ Veldstraat must be completed by March 8 at the latest. It may go a little faster, but until then the street will be a construction zone. During the night of March 1 to 2, work will also be done on the intersection with Zonnestraat.

During the works, the footpath will remain accessible and every shop will remain accessible. There will be two crossings for those who want to cross the construction zone: at Voldersstraat and Bonte Leeuwstraat. Temporary loading and unloading zones are being introduced for suppliers, including in Voldersstraat. Cycling in the street will not be possible in the coming weeks.
