Closure of the Overloon asylum seekers’ center: ‘Why do the good have to suffer from the bad?’ | Maasland

OVERLOON/ STEVENSBEEK – The asylum seekers’ center in Overloon must close, a unanimous Boxmeer city council decided last week. What do the asylum seekers think about this? And the school that offers education and care to the ‘newcomer children’?

The refugee, holding heavy plastic bags with large pieces of chicken and peppers in both hands, points directly to Article 1 of the constitution. And says firmly: ,, With the closure of this asylum seekers center, the municipality of Boxmeer is violating the legal rules. According to article 1, everyone is equal in the Netherlands, but there is no room for us anymore. That is discrimination, refugees also have rights.”

The wry thing in his perception – “no name please, I’m still being watched” – is that he fought for human rights in Afghanistan with a subsidy from the EU. “That’s why I eventually had to flee. And now a European country itself ignores those rules.”

The Netherlands and Afghanistan are incomparable matters, the Afghan refugee immediately admits. “Because the Netherlands is a nice and safe country. But what I’m saying is the mechanism for closing is just wrong.”
