The UN Economic Commission for Europe has published a report calling for increased capture and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from industry and fossil energy generation, an “urgent need” to achieve neutrality. carbon.

The report emphasizes that the capture, use and storage of carbon (CCUS, for its acronym in English) is “crucial” to get closer to the goal of limiting global warming, according to the United Nations in a statement.

The process involves capturing emissions from coal and gas power plants and heavy industry for storage or reuse underground.

In this context, the UN Economic Commission for Europe has stressed that the large-scale deployment of CCUS technology in the region would allow territories to “decarbonize” these sectors.

This would close the gap until “next generation” carbon energy technologies are available, the commission said.

In this regard, the report, which addresses various CCUS technologies and describes more than 50 projects in this area, has also warned that time is running out to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

As the UN has pointed out, the United States, the United Kingdom or Scandinavia are at the forefront in this technology, which has “a barrier” in cost.

“For Europe alone, it is estimated that 320,000 million euros will be needed for the deployment of CCUS planned for 2050, plus another 50,000 million for the required transport infrastructure,” the UN has encrypted.

The commission’s executive secretary, Olga Algayerova, stressed that “strong political will is needed to make affordable, clean, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all a reality by 2030.”
