Climate protection: Switzerland introduces air ticket tax

Switzerland receives a flight ticket tax. After the small chamber of parliament, the large chamber has now also approved the levy. For commercial passenger flights, it should be between 30 and 120 francs (up to 111 euros) per ticket, depending on the distance and booking class. Private passenger flights also have to pay for climate protection – depending on the size of the aircraft, between CHF 500 and 5000 per take-off.

The levy is expected to raise around CHF 500 million (EUR 464 million) a year. The money is said to benefit airlines in part if they invest in renewable fuels. The right-wing SVP faction rejected the proposal. Critics warned that vacationers would in future use airports in nearby countries.

Gasoline is also becoming more expensive

Several European countries have had such fees for years. However, they are usually significantly lower. In Germany, the levy per ticket was just increased to between 13 and 60 euros.

The Social Democratic Environment Minister and President Simonetta Sommaruga hopes that the railways will expand cross-border traffic. “That would be a real alternative to a short-haul flight.”

Gasoline is also becoming more expensive due to climate protection measures. In the future, fuel importers will have to compensate for more climate-damaging CO2 emissions, primarily in Germany. You can therefore open a maximum of ten centimes (a good nine cents) per liter of fuel by 2024, and up to twelve centimes from 2025.
