Cleaning Test Discovery: Mysterious Note Found at Finnish School after 29 Years

Sirkku Polvinen, vice-principal at Mänttä upper secondary school in Finland, had a good laugh when he had to clean the media students’ teaching room on Friday.

In the middle of the clean-up, he found a mysterious, yellowed piece of graph paper under the radiator.

The note was dated 31/05/1994, signed with the initials SN and AK, and had the following message:

“Cleanliness test. If this piece of paper is found by September, then the cleaning is still working”.

Wanted on Facebook

It was the Finnish newspaper Evening newspaper who mentioned the matter first.

When Polvinen took the note to the teacher’s room, the school’s social media manager was inspired to post a request for the authors on Facebook.

– The cleaning test was found on the floor of the former language lab, now the classroom of the media line, under the radiator. If SN and AK read this, you can come and pick up a school T-shirt as a souvenir, the school writes on Facebook.

Discussed with the teacher

On the same evening that the post was published, “SN”, whose real name is Sami Niemelä, discovered that the joke from 29 years ago had been revealed.

A former classmate had shared the post on a Facebook group for the graduating class, and guessed he was one of those behind it.

Took a CT scan – got a shock

– I didn’t immediately understand what this meant, but then it dawned on me, he tells the newspaper.

In 1994, Niemelä was in the second year of high school. He recalls that he and his friend, Aki, got into a discussion with the teacher about the cleanliness of what was then the school’s language lab.

Won the “bet”

He also thinks he remembers that he and Aki claimed that the room was not cleaned very carefully, while the teacher, for his part, assured that it was.

Thus, the student duo placed the note to check, as a sort of bet.

Confined for weeks: – Left to die

It may seem as if they were right, as the note has probably lain untouched and undiscovered for 29 years.

The note has made many, including Niemelä and staff at the school, chuckle.

Niemelä now lives in Helsinki, about three hours away from Mänttä, but assures that he will stop by the school to pick up the “trophy”, in this case the T-shirt with the school’s logo, as soon as he can.
