Cityward Column: Urgent Concerns About the Construction of the Pilatus Tower

Column “Cityward”

“Mr Hodel, you have to do something!”

A reader suggests an article that aims to prevent the construction of the Pilatus Tower. It’s just that the timing is a bit bad.

Construction workers are currently concreting the ground floor of the Pilatus Tower at Kriens Mattenhof train station. As I walked past it, it occurred to me that a reader recently called me about it and said: “Mr. Hodel, you have to do something to stop this tower from being built!” I’m like, “Wow, you’re overestimating the influence of a newspaper report.” He said: “Oh no, you just have to want to, do some real research.” I’m like, “But you already know that the construction work is in full swing.” He said: “Of course.” It was also clear to him that the timing of the matter was somewhat unfavorable. He said: “Nevertheless, it is never too late, after all there are construction stops.”

This is what the Pilatus Tower will one day look like from Sonnenberg.

Okay, the good man is right. But there needs to be valid reasons for this and, as far as I know, there are none at the moment.

When I asked him why the tower shouldn’t be built, he said that it would destroy the beautiful skyline of the city of Lucerne. If tourists (including female tourists) looked towards Pilatus from the pier and the Rathausquai, the Pilatus Tower would appear behind the Chapel Bridge.

I’ve been there several times now and dare to say that this will only affect tourists with extremely long necks. And if not? Luckily, most foreign tourists in Lucerne come from the USA, the birthplace of skyscrapers. You might easily overlook the Pilatus Tower, because at 113 meters it probably wouldn’t even make it into the top 500 tallest buildings in your home country.
