City of 13 million inhabitants in China again in lockdown

Because of an impending “explosion” of infections, a rigorous lockdown has again been imposed on a city of 13 million people in China.

According to the city administration, shops, schools and restaurants in the metropolis of Xi’an, famous for its terracotta army, will remain closed for a week from Wednesday. This should “society calm down as much as possible, reduce mobility and lower the risk of infection”.

18 corona infections since Saturday

According to the authorities, 18 corona infections with the omicron variant have been registered in Xi’an since Saturday. The metropolis in the north of the People’s Republic had already been put under a drastic lockdown at the end of last year. Public life in the city was completely paralyzed for a month. At that time, thousands of corona cases were registered.

Null-Covid-Strategie

China is still pursuing a strict zero-Covid strategy, with individual outbreaks being dealt with immediately through lockdowns and mass testing. The Chinese economy is only just recovering from the effects of a month-long lockdown in Shanghai and strict corona restrictions in the capital Beijing.
