Citizens can help the tax and customs administration in finding smart constructions | Economy

The Tax and Customs Administration will examine the tax constructions of individuals and companies and ask citizens for help. Notable constructions can be reported until the end of January. The goal of the tax authorities is more tax revenue.

The Cabinet announced on Tuesday it would like to raise €550m in additional tax revenue from 2027 by fighting significant tax build-ups. In 2024 it should already yield 160 million euros.

This pertains to the ways businesses and citizens move money to avoid taxes. Companies and citizens therefore use different deductions or rates to pay less taxes. In that case, according to the tax authorities, they are acting properly according to the letter, but not according to the spirit of the law.

“This is an important step towards a more balanced and neutral tax system that works as intended for every taxpayer,” says State Secretary for Finance Marnix van Rij. “I find it undesirable that our tax system allows taxpayers to pay as little tax as possible in this way.”

The Tax and Customs Administration is therefore asking for help and wants you to report remarkable constructions via an Internet consultation. You can do it until the end of January. The same Ministry of Finance will also propose constructions. Next, it is determined which constructions need to be addressed. The implementation of the approach will be presented in spring 2023.
