Navarre Carlotta Ciganda and the malagueña Azahara Muñoz (I hadn’t played a tournament since last November and it was the Spanish Open) they had a good start to the tournament in the LPGA Drive in Championship which started this Thursday in the Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club de Arizona. They each delivered cards of 67 strokes, five under par, and are sixth, two strokes behind the lead shared by the Mexican Gaby López, the Korean Jenny Shin and the North American Alison Lee.
Carlota delivered a card without bogeys, with five birdies and up in the fight from the beginning. Azahara, bogey at 1 and then six birdies. The other Spanish in contention, moon sobron, finished with 73 hits. He will have to play well this Friday to make the cut, since he has provisionally stood at -2.
It should be noted that the main favorites for victory did not have the dream start. Nelly Korda and Jin Young Ko, both at 70 (-2), have options this week to wrest World Number One from the absent Lydia Ko.
