CICS – ICOM-CC Konferenz 2021

With over 4,000 members from 86 countries, the Conservation Committee in the International Council of Museums is the largest international forum for conservation professionals. Every three years, this committee organizes a congress that was last attended by over 1,000 participants in Copenhagen in 2017. In the hope of a face-to-face event, the conference was initially postponed last year in order to be held digitally from May 17-21, 2021. The CICS is strongly represented among the numerous contributions with three presentations in the specialist groups Art Technological Source Research, Graphic Documents and Paintings:

Charlotte Bretzendorfer, MA student at CICS, Marlen Börngen, research assistant and Prof. Dr. Andrea Pataki-Hundt jointly present the aging properties of 2 hydroxypropyl cellulose: Klucel hydroxypropylcellulose: Its impact on artificial ageing and consequences for conservation usage – A case study. They evaluate the parameters of the artificial aging of modified cellulose ethers.

Vanessa Schwaderlapp presents the results of her MA thesis Unlocking histories: The Schoenfeld/LUKAS archive and its potential for art technolgical research, which was created in cooperation with the Restoration Center Düsseldorf and designed by Inken Maria Holubec and Prof. Dr. Gunnar Heydenreich was supervised. The results of this study deepen the knowledge of the artist materials production in Düsseldorf and the influence of these materials on the appearance and aging of paintings by well-known artists.

Fanny Weber lectures Max Pechstein’s „Sommer in den Dünen“: Joint research on the intended surface aesthetics. As part of her MA thesis supervised by Hana Streicher (Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin) and Prof. Heydenreich, she was able to significantly expand her knowledge of Max Pechstein’s painting technique and in particular the intended surface effect of his paintings with art-technological examinations and further research.

Dr. Doris Oltrogge and Prof. Dr. Andrea Pataki-Hundt also act as Working Group Coordinator in the Working Groups Art Technological Search Research (D. Oltrogge) and Graphic Documents for three years (2020-2023) and bundle the research questions and interests of the international Working Group Members.
