Church in the Cinema: Relevance for Young People and Building a New Community

A holy mass takes place twice a year in the Schubert Cinema in Graz until the start of the summer holidays as part of the “Church in the Cinema” project. According to Chaplain Dominik Wagner, one of the organizers, the aim of the “missionary project” is to use these masses to build a new community “that focuses on God’s message”. The target group is primarily young people who are looking for deeper knowledge but cannot find access to the church. Wagner knows many people, especially students, who have lost connection to the church due to the change of location.

Making church relevant for young people

According to Wagner, moving Holy Mass to the cinema is an attempt to create Christian identity and make the church relevant for young people. “The church has always had the gift of preserving the core, namely what has been given to us in revelation, but of constantly adapting the way it is conveyed.” As part of this new community, mountain hikes with spiritual impulses, charitable activities and “Theology on tap” planned.
