This year vied for the same two Christmas markets for the attention of Winterthur residents. At the same time, the new virus variant Omikron slowed business: the winter market on Teuchelweiherplatz relied on a certificate requirement from the start, the traditional winter market in the old town only at the beverage stands. There the guests had to drink their mulled wine in a fenced-in area.
A circumstance that apparently did not appeal to all of the guests. “The drinks stalls have fallen by over 50 percent compared to regular years,” confirms Norbert Albl, President of the Winterthur Christmas Market Association. “As the organizer, we accepted that because that was the only way we were allowed to hold the market at all.” However, there were sometimes discussions, for example when someone in a group was not vaccinated and had to stay outside. After the Federal Council took the measures tightened all beverage stands switched to the 2-G rule.
