Every December 22, the Christmas Lottery distributes fortune in Spain, but not in equal parts. After 200 years of history, there are still cities where El Gordo has never fallen. To this day, the cities of Ávila, Girona, Jaén, Tarragona and Toledo have never celebrated the first prize, according to ANAPAL (National Association of Provincial Associations of Lottery Administrators).
In terms of provinces, the autonomous city of Melilla is the only region in Spain that has never been graced with the Gordo, endowed with 400,000 euros per tenth. It was in the 2018 Christmas draw when the city of Melilla became the only territory that has not received any of the great lottery prizes. The rest of the 50 provinces of Spain have been lucky enough to sing el Gordo.

The ranking of the luckiest places is still led one more year by the city of Madrid, where the ‘Gordo’ has fallen a total of 81 times, the last of them in 2020. What’s more, the first prize has gone to to Madrid in the last five years (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020).
According to data from the Sociedad Estatal de Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (SELAE), the second most fortunate city in Spain is Barcelona, where the first prize has fallen a total of 42 times since 1817. These two cities are followed by Seville , with 17, Bilbao (14, the last in 2020), Valencia (13), Zaragoza (13) and Cádiz (12).

This is the case of Malaga, where it has relapsed 10 times; Santander, Alicante and Granada, on 9 occasions.
