Will the price of fries increase in the coming weeks? They could be victims of the shortage of sunflower oil, the production of which is disrupted by the conflict in Ukraine. In the North, chip shops pay the price.
–
Sunflower oil is essential for many chip shops. In two months, its price has almost doubled for Aurélie Francq, from the Brand’s chip shop in Marcq-en-Baroeul (North). “It’s complicated, at the store we are limited, and afterwards, the oil has increased. Usually I buy my oil 54 euros per can excluding taxes, and today we buy it 98 euros”, she confides. She consumes more than 80 liters of oil every week for her chip shop. Faced with the risk of shortages, she has built up a stock, but purchases from suppliers are now rationed.
Myriam Khoualed, manager of the Au Petit Festin chip shop in Lille (Nord), chose a cheaper alternative: palm oil. However, prices have also increased. “From 14.50 euros, I went to 22.90, in one week”, she explains. His supplier is out of fat. Despite the high cost, she does not wish to change her prices for the moment, in order to keep her clientele as long as possible.
