Apple Cook has revealed in Germany that future chips will mostly come from the Arizona factory. According to Bloomberg, it’s TSMC’s factory!
Apple is transforming the “long chain” into a “short chain”.
During a recent trip to Europe, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that the chips needed for future devices will be sourced primarily from the Arizona factory under construction, reducing reliance on Asian-made chips.
Bloomberg reported that the Arizona factory Cook was referring to is likely a factory operated by TSMC. The factory is expected to open in 2024 and TSMC has already set its sights on a second fab in the US to further expand production of “American-made potato chips”.
Cook revealed the information at an internal company meeting in Germany during a recent trip to Europe. He also said that Apple will expand the supply of chips to European factories.
Cook told Apple engineers in Germany, “We’ve decided to buy supply of a factory in Arizona that will start production in 2024, which means it takes about two years, but it could be sooner.”
“In Europe, I’m sure we will get European supplies,” Cook said.
After Bloomberg News reported Cook’s remarks, TSMC’s ADR continued to climb sharply in the US stock market on Tuesday, closing above 10%. Apple shares were largely unchanged.
After the former US stock market closed, TSMC has already grown due to massive purchases by Berkshire, a subsidiary of stock god Warren Buffett.
Apple and TSMC spokespersons did not comment.
Intel is also building a fab in Arizona at the same time, and the completion date is around 2024. Although Intel has been Apple’s supply chain for many years, according to Bloomberg’s analysis, Intel is unlikely to take over business from Apple. Apple Mac and other products have already separated from Intel processors and moved to their own design chips, while Intel has not yet achieved actual results in the foundry.
The processor is the heart of all Apple products, whether it’s the Mac Pro, iPhone or AirPod, the chips in them are designed by Apple and manufactured by TSMC. Bringing a percentage of production back to the US is an important step after years of dependence on Asia.
But an unresolved question will be whether the Arizona factory building meets Apple’s needs.
TSMC previously said the Arizona plant will adopt a 5-nanometer process, with an initial monthly production capacity of 20,000 pieces. But can this really meet Apple’s higher level requirements for 3nm?
In theory, TSMC should be able to introduce higher level processes. Apple may also use the factory first to meet demand for devices that don’t yet require 3nm.
As for Europe, many governments, such as the United States, have implemented various preferential policies to attract more wafer factories. In the internal meeting, Cook did not mention where Europe’s supply of chips will come from, but the media has already revealed that TSMC has been in discussions with the German government to set up a German chip factory.
