Three people from the same family died in a fire that broke out during the night in a house in Sottomarina di Chioggia (Venice). The victims are Gianni Boscolo Scarmanati, 64 years old, his wife is 59 years old Luisella Veronese and his 27-year-old son Davide. Another child of the couple was not at home.
The three were sleeping upstairs and would have died due to the smoke, caused by the fire that broke out on the ground floor, for reasons yet to be ascertained, around half past midnight. The Chioggia and Cavarzere fire brigade teams and the Mestre ladder truck were on site, working until the first light of dawn. The house is under seizure to allow investigations.
The alarm
The fire involved the ground floor of the house next to others and on three levels. The alarm was raised by some young people who saw the flames coming out of the house and also used a ladder to try to save people.
The firefighters put out the flames, which affected a room on the ground floor only, while the smoke channeled into the stairwell, saturating the entire house.
Lethal smoking
The firefighters, having entered the house with self-contained breathing apparatus, found the people lifeless on the second floor as confirmed by the Suem health workers. The flames on the ground floor were completely extinguished and the building was seized by the firefighters after reclamation. The rescue operations ended shortly before dawn.
