Video platform TikTok was the most downloaded app in the world in 2020. The Chinese app beats its American competitors Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. This is reported by research agency App Annie, which tracks people’s social media behavior.
According to App Annie, TikTok is on the rise and Americans and British are more on the Chinese app than on YouTube. TikTok says it has 700 million monthly users worldwide. However, the reach of Facebook and its various apps is still much greater: more than 3.5 billion people use Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger at least once a month.
National Security
In 2019, US President Trump tried to ban the app in the United States. According to Trump, TikTok posed a threat to national security because China held data and would spy on users.
