Chinese President Xi Jinping Urges Diplomatic Envoys to Create “Iron Diplomatic Army”

Chinese President Xi Jinping today called on Chinese ambassadors to create an “iron diplomatic army” loyal to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

“Dare to be good at fighting and become defenders of national interests. It is necessary… to resolutely defend the interests of national sovereignty, security and development with a stance of readiness and a firm will to stand up to the strong parties,” Xi told Chinese overseas envoys gathered in Beijing, state-run China Central Television reported.

His words return Beijing to the bolder and more confrontational style of rhetoric adopted by Chinese diplomats after 2020, which has been less pronounced in the past year as China tries to attract foreign investment to its weakened economy, Reuters noted. .

Ties with the United States briefly went through a thaw after Xi met with US President Joe Biden in November, but Beijing is also currently embroiled in diplomatic disputes with the Philippines over a disputed reef in South China Sea waters, as well as Japan over the discharge of waste water from the failed Fukushima reactor.

“It is necessary to put rules and discipline in the foreground, to observe strict discipline, to take strict responsibility… and to create a diplomatic iron army that is loyal to the party… to be bold, to be good at fighting and observe strict discipline,” Xi said during the meeting with diplomats.
