Chinese President Xi Jinping to Miss G20 Summit in India, Disappoints Biden

Taipei-

Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to miss this weekend’s G20 summit in New Delhi, India, and Biden expressed disappointment on Sunday (September 3), but added that he would meet him.

“I’m disappointed, but I’ll meet him,” Biden told reporters in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, when asked if Xi would not attend the G20 summit.

Biden did not say where he might meet with Xi next time. It is generally expected that the summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders to be held in San Francisco in November may lead to another visit to Xi Jinping.

Biden and Xi met face-to-face for the first time at last year’s G20 summit in Bali, seen as the start of a renewed dialogue between the U.S. and China, where they agreed that differences should be managed to prevent rivalry from turning into conflict. However, the Chinese spy balloon incident in February this year made the relationship between the two countries fall to the bottom.

In recent months, some senior officials of the Biden administration have traveled to China to seek to improve relations, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken (Antony Blinken), Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen (Janet Yellen), climate envoy John Kerry (John Kerry) and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

Reuters reported last week that Xi would be absent from the G20 summit and that China would be attended by Premier Li Qiang. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that Li Qiang will attend the China-ASEAN (10+1) Leaders’ Meeting, ASEAN Plus China, Japan and South Korea (10+3) Leaders’ Meeting and the East Asia Summit held in Jakarta, Indonesia from September 5 to 8. EAS). Xi’s decision not to travel to the Indian capital for the summit could further cool Sino-Indian relations given tensions along the Sino-Indian border.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said at a press conference on Monday that at the invitation of the government of the Republic of India, Premier Li Qiang of the State Council will attend the 18th summit of the G20 leaders in New Delhi, India from September 9 to 10.

When talking about the upcoming visit, Biden said he wanted a little more coordination, “I think they (India and Vietnam) both want to establish a closer relationship with the United States, which is very helpful.” After participating in the G20 summit, he will visit Vietnam to strengthen US relations in Asia.

Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 negotiator, told the Financial Times that there was an agreement on a final communiqué despite geopolitical frictions that have dogged progress at the summit and Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s decision to be absent. is just around the corner, including language about wars in Russia and Ukraine that Moscow and Beijing object to.

Kant downplayed Sino-Indian tensions in the interview, saying China “knows its multilateral responsibilities.” “Our aim is that we should have a consensus on everything, including the Bali agreement, including geopolitics,” he said.

The Financial Times reported that Kant’s optimistic remarks contrasted sharply with the pessimism of some Western delegations. Two European officials involved in the preparations for the summit said a joint statement was likely not to be reached given the standoff over Ukraine and that the differences were worse than at last year’s Bali summit.
