Chinese Electric Car Brands to Invade 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show: Will They Threaten Japanese Brands?

Jakarta

Electric car brands from China will invade the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) automotive exhibition in August. It was confirmed that there would be 4 newcomer brands from China. Will their presence threaten Japanese brands in Indonesia?

For information, the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) has confirmed the presence of several new brands from China, including Haval, Ora, Tank, and Neta. The four new brands will introduce themselves at the GIIAS 2023 event on August 10-20.

The three names mentioned at the beginning (Haval, Ora, Tank), are car brands that are members of the Great Wall Motor (GWM) conglomerate. Furthermore, Neta is a brand of electric cars produced by Hozon Auto New Energy Automobile.

General Chairperson of Gaikindo Yohannes Nangoi said the presence of new brands from China would not threaten Japanese manufacturers who already exist in the country. In fact, the Indonesian automotive industry will grow in a positive direction, because Indonesian people have more choices of vehicles.

“It’s not like that. If it’s just for us to be harmonious. Because the more (brands) that enter, the bigger the market grows, the bigger the exports, the better for Indonesia. We don’t (look at) Japan, Korea (China), all of them are the same,” said Nangoi to journalists in Jakarta (13/7/2023).

Previously, Nangoi also explained that the entry of new vehicle brands into the country proved the great potential of the Indonesian automotive market. Many new brands can stimulate sales of new cars in the country.

“In 2022, globally the production of motorized vehicles in Indonesia is currently ranked 11th, while for the domestic market Indonesia is in 14th position in the world. With a total population of more than 275 million people, and a car ownership ratio of 99 units per 1,000 population, Indonesia has the largest potential market in Southeast Asia,” said Nangoi.
