Chinese Defense Minister Calls Beijing-Washington Ties at Critical Point, Urges US to Stop Meddling

BEIJING, KOMPAS.com – Minister of Defense (Minister of Defense) China Wei Fenghe said Beijing’s relationship with United States of America (AS) is at a critical point.

He said on Sunday (12/6/2022) that it was up to the US to improve bilateral relations between the two countries.

At the Asian security meeting, the Shangri-La Dialogue, Wei said that China is only seeking peace and stability, not acting as an aggressor.

He also called on the US to strengthen solidarity and oppose confrontation and division Reuters.

China, Wei said, firmly rejects US accusations and even threats from the US Defense Secretary’s speech Lloyd Austin on Saturday (11/6/2022).

“We call on the US side to stop smearing and containing China. Stop interfering in China’s internal affairs. Bilateral relations cannot improve unless the US side can do that,” Wei said at the Shangri-La Dialogue.

On Saturday, Austin said there had been a “worrying” increase in the number of unsafe and unprofessional “encounters” between Chinese planes and ships and ships from other countries.

Austin added that the US would support its allies, including Taiwan.

On the one hand, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was the center of attention at the meeting, and Wei emphasized that China supports peace talks and opposes the supply of weapons and maximum pressure.

“What is the root cause of this crisis? Who is the mastermind behind this? Who is most harmed? And who will benefit the most? Who promotes peace and who adds fuel to the fire? I think we all know the answers to these questions,” Wei said without discussing it or stating China’s position.
