Chinese Automakers Unite to Defeat Old Legends and Go Global: Challenges and Controversies

Chinese automaker BYD boss Wang Chuanfu has called on Chinese automakers to unite and “defeat the old legends,” stressing that the time has come for Chinese automakers, saying the Chinese people want to see Chinese brands become international players.

BYD is one of Tesla’s main competitors in the Chinese market, and the manufacturer has also been able to expand ambitiously and quite successfully in Europe. BYD’s patriotic video garnered a lot of attention on Chinese social media sites, but served as a reminder that all these manufacturers are fierce competitors.

The managers of NIO and Li Auto responded positively to such a call, but others warn that such videos may attract additional attention from regulators in other countries. It is no secret that the Chinese are eager to conquer their place in the world car market. This is especially true in Europe, where Chinese automakers have to live with anti-dumping regulations.

True, not all Chinese automakers are excited about such an announcement. Wang Yuanli, chief engineer of Great Wall Motors, said in a post on Weibo that Chinese automakers cannot be united at a time like this, suggesting that there is still bitterness in their hearts towards each other. It’s no secret that automakers in China have engaged in a so-called price war, lowering the prices of their cars and trying to squeeze out competitors.
