Chinese automaker BYD leading global electric vehicle sales, surpassing Tesla and Volkswagen

According to the number of electric vehicles sold this year, the Chinese automobile company BYD is leading not only in its country, but also sets the tone in other world markets.

Founded 20 years ago, BYD literally shocks the other players with its results. Thus, in 51 weeks of this year (December 18-24), BYD sold 63,900 new energy vehicles (statistics include electric, hybrid, units with range extension, respectively BEV, PHEV, EREV), which is almost 24 percent more than the week before. By December 24, the number of BYD cars sold increased to 180,000 units. The second best result in 51 weeks is Tesla (18,500 units), while Volkswagen is only in seventh place with 6,800 cars.

On an annual basis, from January to October 2023, BYD sold 1.92 million new cars, which is 58% more than the same period in 2022, when 1.21 million units were sold.

The results abroad are equally impressive. As a completely new brand and the associated lack of recognition, BYD was able to register more than 11,000 electric cars in Europe in the first 10 months of this year. This means that this Chinese brand has overtaken such manufacturers as Jeep, Mazda, Jaguar and DS in the BEV ranking.

BYD was also the best-selling BEV brand in Brazil, Israel, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The manufacturer ranks second in Australia and New Zealand. These are markets for different incomes and buyer opportunities, and that’s where BYD’s true potential lies – the company is able to develop vehicles for different global markets and different buyer groups.

The second key element that explains BYD’s rapid growth is its wide product range – the company is currently the car brand with the largest number of electric models on the market, including the A, B, C, D and E segments, which offer mostly sedans and crossovers.
