The mega-company is not alone: Chinese vaccine makers CanSino and SinoVac also say they will come up with an effective vaccine before the end of the year. The pharmaceutical companies in question are currently undergoing the final research phase, in which the vaccines are tested on tens of thousands of test subjects.

One billion vaccines every year
If everything goes according to plan, more than 600 million corona vaccines will be on the shelf by the end of this year. From next year, the production capacity will be increased to several billion doses per year. Vaccines, according to China, are also explicitly intended for the rest of the world.

And let there be no misunderstanding: the Chinese do not do shoddy work. Anke Huckriede, professor of vaccinology at the University of Groningen, is following Chinese developments with interest: “As far as we can now judge, the quality of Chinese vaccines is not inferior to Western vaccine projects. Which also speaks in their favor: all information from the first test phases has been shared internationally. This was not the case with the Russian corona vaccine Sputnik this summer, for example. ”

However, the chance that we will also receive a Chinese-made corona vaccine in the Netherlands in the short term is extremely small. The Netherlands, together with the other member states of the European Union, has concluded vaccine deals with six pharmaceutical companies in Europe and the United States. According to insiders, a seventh deal is in the works with the American pharmaceutical company Novavax. China appears to be offside.
